The ten-year reunion
that’s the one where
you see the show offs
impressing others
with their achieved status
since high school
some were divorced and took off with their
old flames afterwards
some married their high school sweethearts
most are drunk
(or high on something)
now,
at the twenty year reunion
some take off with another
high school old flame
still trying to impress others
with their status
more were divorced
some divorced their high school
sweethearts
some remarried
some stayed married
and the thirty year reunion
I totally missed it…
I didn’t see the sense to attend
the forty-year reunion
I missed that one, too…
didn’t see the sense in attending
that one, either…
But, oh, I wouldn’t miss
the fifty year reunion for all the gold
in the world
that’s not the one to miss
if you are lucky enough
to live that long
and make a showing
still able to stand
with this state of knowing…
because that’s the one
where
what you are doing by
being there is you are saying your ‘good bye’s’
in advance
with actions not necessarily with words
I call it the farewell
reunion
it will be the one where I find
out those I’ve known
who’ve
already passed
and talk amongst the still living
who
will soon
be next
in line
it will be interesting
to note
who will be
the last man
standing
at
the
sixtieth
reunion.
nerds
bullies
cheer leaders
the soches
jocks
stoners
the unpopular
or imvisibles
and
those silent types
(wallflowers)
like me
who
don’t seem to fit
in any category
whatsoever…
Great poem! Really enjoyed this.
