a better man

a better man poem by steven james humphreys

if I were a better man

I’d not get angry

I would never feel disappointed

I would always forgive

and be more trusting of my fellow man

I would love without expecting love in return

until then, I will try to pretend

I am someone I cannot be

in this lifetime

even in countless lives to come

for I have accepted I am flawed

I have been made human

not God like

I possess all the inherent faults and have made

countless mistakes and misjudgments in every arena

but, I feel there is hope

for there will come a time

when us humans have had enough of this misery

we’ve created all by ourselves

that through the grace of

God our hearts will then miraculously change

and this entire planet

will become a place

with no room for hate and war.
