a child may say

a child may say poem by steven james humphreys

a child learns

but it doesn’t stop there

our search for happiness

instead of cheerfulness

leads us to sadness

a child smiles

and says what’s on their mind

so innocently

and we were children once

and forgot what we learned

about how to be happy

they sleep so soundly without a care

and cry and dry their eyes

their play is their work

picking a flower

watching butterflies

they drink water

from the fountain

when thirsty

they laugh so easily

and live within each moment

as if time will always stand still.
